Religion
The middle colony had a diversity of religions. William Penn belonged to a religious group called the Quakers. In England, people who did not belong to the Church of England were punished. Penn wanted a colony where all Christians could live in peace. There wasn’t a lot of trouble since there was mostly religious freedom so most got along with each other. People from all religions moved to the middle colonies in search for religious freedom. Despite mixing all religions together, this is a place where there is religious freedom and no one can take that from you. People from different religious backgrounds could live peacefully and no one got in fights. They were also against slavery and women were equal. There were no ministers and they believed all people had a direct link with God.
Comparison
Economy and Geography had big roles on each other. Geography included three rivers which were the Hudson River, Susquehanna River, and the Delaware River. These helped with transportation and many other things such as farming. The land was fertile and the middle colonies had long growing seasons. Farmers also used the rivers to ship their goods. This allowed the middle colonies economy to thrive because of surplus of goods such as wheat, fruit, vegetables, and many other.
Primary Source
In William Penn’s letter to the Indians, and he states that the Natives have been mistreated and how William is not like that. William wanted to create a good relationship with them. The colonists couldn’t take land from the Natives without buying the land and the Natives agreeing. William showed his anger against the people who weren’t fair with the Natives, and how he will treat the Natives with more kindness and respect. This caused the Natives to become friends with the Natives and have a relationship that benefited both sides. The two lived very peacefully.
